İLÇE TARİHİ
İlçemizin coğrafi konumu; Tarihi merkezlere yakınlığı, tarih ve ören yerlerinin varlığı Roma, Danışment gibi uygarlığa sahne olduğunu göstermektedir. İlçemizin temelini 'Musaköy' oluşturmaktadır. 13 hane tarafından kurulan İlçemiz; 1864 Kafkas göçmenleri, 1877 - 1878 Osmanlı Rus harbi nedeni ile Kars-Erzurum, Bayburt ve Artvin yöresinden gelen göçmenlerin iskanları ile hane sayısının 80'e ulaştığı, 15.02.1932 tarihinde Sivas Samsun TCDD Yollarının faaliyete geçmesi, istasyon binasının yapımı ile yük indirme bindirme merkezi olması dolayısıyla, çevrede yapılaşmanın başlaması ile nüfusun hızla artığı görülür. 1949-1950 Eğitim-Öğretim döneminde 2 sınıflı İlkokulun açılmasıyla ismi bu tarihten itibaren "Arabacı Musaköy" olarak anılmaya başlayan ilçemiz, 1972 yılında belde olarak faaliyetine devam etmiştir. İlçemizi 1982 yılında ziyaret eden dönemim Köy İşleri Bakanı Münir GÜNEY'in Kasabamızın isminin
Yeşilyurt olarak değiştirilmesini teklif etmesi sonucu İlçemizin ismi bu tarihten itibaren
Yeşilyurt olarak değiştirilerek bu şekilde anılmaya başlamıştır. 1984 -1986 yılları arasında Afgan göçmenleri için yapılan konutların bitirilmesi üzerine bu konutlara yerleştirilen 114 hane (Yaklaşık 500 kişi) Türkmen göçmenlerinin iskanı ile nüfusun hızla yükselişi ilçe siyasilerini harekete geçirerek yapılan girişimler neticesi, Kasabamız 4 Temmuz 1987 tarihinde İlçe olarak ilan edilmiş ve ilçemiz 12.08.1988 tarihinde resmen faaliyetine başlamıştır.
COĞRAFİ YAPI
Anadolu Bölgesine çok yakın bulunduğundan, karadeniz iklimi ile karasal iklim arası geçiş iklimi görülür. Yazlar sıcak kışlar ise karadeniz bölgesine göre soğuk geçmektedir. En sıcak aylar yaz aylarıdır. Ortalama sıcaklık 17 derece ile 19 derece arasında değişmektedir. Kış mevsimi ise sıcaklık ortalaması 0 derecenin altındadır. İlçemiz 24.876 Hektar alan üzerine kurulmuş ve rakımı 1050 m olup, 4 derece 04 dakika kuzey Enlemi ile 36 derece 26 dakika doğu Boylamları arasındadır. Bitki örtüsü yaz aylarında görülen kurak ile yükseklik karakterize eder. Alüvyal topraklar tabii bitki türlerinin hepsine uygundur. Ormanlık alanlar meşe, sarıçam ve çınar gibi bitkilerdir.
EKONOMİK YAPI
Ekonomik hayatın tarihi; ilçemizin coğrafi yapısının tarımsal ve hayvansal üretime uygun olması dolayısıyla, bu yönde gelişme göstermiş olup, bunun dışında küçük çapta ticaretle uğraşan yaklaşık 458 civarında esnaf bulunmaktadır. Büyük çapta sanayi kuruluşu bulunmamakta olup, İlçe merkezinde bir adet Banka (Ziraat Bankası) bir adet Tarım Kredi Kooperatifi ve bir adet Esnaf Kefalet Kooperatifi bulunmaktadır. Fuar, sergi ve panayır gibi faaliyetlere yönelik her hangi bir çalışma mevcut değildir. En önemli akarsuyumuz Yeşil Irmağın bir kolu olan çekerek ırmağı olup, çamlıbel dağlarından doğmaktadır. Sulu tarım (Şeker Pancarı, Patates ve baklagiller) bu bölge çevresinde yapılmaktadır. Sürekli akış gösteren bir diğer akarsuyumuzda Özdere'dir. Güneyden den kuzeye doğru akarak Çekerek Irmağına karışmaktadır.
İDARİ YAPI
1987 Yılına kadar Artova İlçesine bağlı Kasaba iken, 04.07.1987 gün ve 19507 Sayılı Resmi Gazetede yayınlanan 3392 Sayılı Kanunla İlçe olmuş ve 12.08.1988 de İlk Kaymakamı göreve başlamıştır. İlçe Merkezine bağlı 2 Kasaba 16 Köy 1 mezra mevcuttur. Kasaba ve Köylerimiz İlçemizin Doğu, Batı, Güney ve Kuzey bölgelerinde yer almakta olup, İlçeye uzaklıkları yaklaşık 5 ile 15 Km arasındadır.
