İLÇE TARİHİ Eyalet 'i Rum'daki 15.asır kalelerinden bahsedilirken Tozanlı Nahiyesinde bir kale kaydı bulunmaktadır. Burasının Akarçay (Meğelli) Kasabası yaylasının üzerinde bulunan ve AKINCI KALESİ diye adlandırılan yer olması kuvvetle muhtemeldir. Yukarıdaki kayıtlara göre Almus 'un bulunduğu bölge yani Tozanlı nın varoluşu 1453'den öncelerine kadar götürmek mümkündür, bundan öncelerine ait devirler hakkında kayda dayanan bilgimiz bulunmamaktadır. Bugün ilçe sınırları dahilinde eski tarihe ışık tutacak kalıntıları bulmak zaman, zaman Merkez, Kasaba ve Köylerimizde topraktan pişmiş mezar lahitleri, küp kırıklarına rastlamak mümkün olmaktadır. Buna göre Almus ve civarının Bizans ve ondan öncesi Roma İmparatorluğu devirlerinde yerleşmiş alanı olduğu söylenebilir. Yerleşme alanlarının daha çok dere civarlarına veya tepelere dağıldığını kalıntıların buralarda bulunuşu teyit etmektedir. Almus' un Osmanlı İmparatorluğu devrinde mevcut 1772 kayıtlarına göre Tozanlı Nahiyesinden ayrı olarak GAVURNİ-KAFİRNİ adı ile anılan yer olduğu anlaşılmaktadır. Sonradan şimdiki ismini aldığı, başlangıçta köy ve nahiye iken idari taksimatta ilçe merkezi olmuş 1/Mart/1954 yılında ALMUS İLÇESİ Kurulmuştur. COĞRAFİ YAPI Almus Orta Karadeniz Bölgesinde Tokat İline bağlı 35 Km mesafede bir ilçe olup,doğusunda Reşadiye İlçesi ve Sivas İli Hafik İlçesi,batısında Tokat İli, kuzeyinde Niksar İlçesi, güneyinde Sivas İli bulunmakta olup,Kuzey Yarım Küresinde, Enlemi:40 derece, 22 dakika, Boylamı:36 derece 55 dakikadır.Yüzölçümü 944,69 Km2 olup, 832 rakımlıdır. Almus 'un iklimi, Karadeniz' in tesiri altında kalan sahalarla Orta Anadolu 'nun kara iklimi yanında geçiş teşkil eder. Yağış genellikle aylara dağılmıştır. Ortalama olarak yağış 54.42 mm.dir Ocak, Şubat, Mart, Nisan, Mayıs aylarında maksimum dereceye yükselir. En az yağış düşen aylar Temmuz ve Ağustos' dur. EKONOMİK YAPI İlçenin deprem kuşağında olması ve halkın ekonomik sıkıntısı nedeni ile ilçede yapılaşma ahşap ve iki katlı olmaktadır. Son yıllarda betonarme binalar yapılsa da istenilen düzeyde değildir.Ancak son yıllarda ilçemiz Merkez Belediye Başkanlığının öncülüğünde yaptırılan 1. ve 2. Etap TOKİ Konutları ilçedeki konut sıkıntısını büyük oranda çözmüştür. İlçemizde büyük çaplı sanayi kuruluşu yoktur.İlçemizde faaliyet gösteren 2 un fabrikasında günlük işleme kapasitesi 55 ton civarındadır. İDARİ YAPI İlçede 10 Kasaba, 29 Köy mevcuttur.
