İLÇE TARİHİ
Osmanlı arşivlerinde bulunan tarihi vesikalara göre, daha 18. Yüzyılın başlarından itibaren KAZA-İ
ERBAA' dan söz edilmektedir. Ancak sözü edilen Kaza-i
Erbaa, Sonusa, Karayaka, Taşabat ve Erek adlı dört nahiyenin meydana getirdiği bir idari yapılanmadır. Bu dört nahiyeden biri olan Erek nahiyesinin zamanla büyüyerek gelişmesi, diğer nahiyelerin yanında kendisine müstesna bir yer kazandırmıştır. Nitekim Erek nahiyesi zamanın devlet idaresinde 1872 yılında Amasya sancağına bağlı bir kaza (ilçe) olarak teşkilatlandırılmış, daha önce nahiyenin genel adı olan
Erbaa adı da yeni kazanın-ilçenin adı olmuştur. Böylece 1872 yılında tesis bulunan
Erbaa Kaymakamlığı, 1892 yılında Tokat'a bağlanmıştır.
COĞRAFİ YAPI
Erbaa İlçesi Orta Karadeniz bölgesinde Tokat iline bağlı olup, Kelkit ve Tozanlı çaylarının birleşerek Yeşilırmak (İris) adını aldığını yerde bereketli topraklar üzerinde kurulmuş şirin bir ilçemizdir. İlçe toprakları, kısmen Tozanlı çayı olmak üzere özellikle Kelkit Irmağı boyundaki bir ova ile bunu çevreleyen dağlık yerleri içine alan 1111 Kilometrekarelik yüzölçümüne sahiptir. Kuzeyden Samsun'un Çarşamba ilçesi ile Ordu ilinin Akkuş ilçesi, batıdan Amasya'nın Taşova ilçesi, doğudan Tokat'ın Niksar ilçesi, güneyden Tokat merkez ve güneybatıdan Turhal ilçesi ile çevrilidir. ilçenin üzerinde bulunduğu ovanın kuzeyinde; Canik dağı içerisinde değerlendirilen Karınca dağı, güneyinde Sakarat ve Boğalı dağları, doğu ve batısında da bu dağların uzantıları yer almaktadır.
EKONOMİK YAPI
Erbaa Tokat'ın en zengin ilçelerinden biridir. İlçe Ekonomisi geniş ölçüde tarım ve sanayiye dayalıdır. Mikro Klima özelliğine sahip İlçemizde, iklimin uygunluğu dolayısıyla narenciye dışında hemen hemen tüm ürünler yetişebilmektedir. Bunlardan başlıcaları; Hububat, Endüstri bitkileri, yem bitkileri, meyve ve sebze ürünleridir. Son yıllarda bağcılık, fındık ve kivi yetiştiriciliğinde gelişmeler olmaktadır. Örtü altı sebze yetiştiriciliği ve kesme çiçek yetiştiriciliği ile beraber, sırık domates yetiştiriciliği önemli bir gelir kaynağı oluşturmaktadır. Yüksek yerleşime sahip köylerimizde ise; besi hayvancılığı, süt inekçiliği ve arıcılık önemli yer tutmaktadır. Gökal Beldesi ve civar köylerde de fındık ve çilek üretimi her geçen gün artmaktadır.
Erbaa'da bulunan mevcut sanayi sektörüne dikkat edildiğinde ise tekstil, toprak ve orman sanayinin ağırlığı açıkça görülür. Önceleri istihdamda lokomotif görevini üstlenen toprak sanayi son yıllarda yerini tekstil sanayisine bırakmıştır.
Erbaa 1950'den başlamak suretiyle ve bilhassa 1990'lardan itibaren sanayi alanında yaşadığı hızlı gelişim
Erbaa'nın ekonomik değerleri bakımından tarımsal ekonomi ile denge sağlamış ve bu gelişim tarımsal ekonomiyi geride bırakacağı öngörülmektedir.
