Mevlevihaneyi yapı olarak incelediğimizde, zemin katında beş oda yer almaktadır. Şeyhin kabul odası (baş oda) dışındakiler çeşitli hizmetlerin görüldüğü mekânlardır.
Tokat'ta Mevleviliğin gelişim süreci ilk olarak; Mevlana'nın müridi olan ve Selçuklu Hükümdarlarından IV. Kılıçaslan'nın 1260 yılında, Pervane unvanıyla görevlendirdiği Muine'd-din Süleyman'ın çalışmalarıyla tanındığını söyleyebiliriz. Yaygınlaşması ise; Sultan Veled kızı Şeref Hatun'un müritlerinden, Mevlevi halifesi Konya'lı Arife-i Hoş-likaa'nın çalışmaları, Tokat büyüklerinin de kendisine mürit olması sonucu gerçekleşir. Mevlevihanenin ikinci katında bulunan semahane kısmına dışarıdan bir merdivenle çıkılır. Semahane girişi önünde ahşap direkli bir balkon bulunmaktadır. Üst kata hakim olacak derecede geniş tutulmuş olan semahane ahşap sütunlarla taşınan kubbe ile örtülüdür. Güneyinde alçı malzemeli mihrap bulunur ve semahanenin girişi mihrabın tam karşısındaki girişten sağlanır. Girişin sağında ve solunda sema ayinini izlemeye gelenler için ayrılmış kısımlar ile üst kısmında sazendelerin yer aldığı mahfil şeklinde mutrıbhane bulunmaktadır. Semahanenin doğu tarafında ara kat şeklinde kadınlar mahfili bulunmaktadır. Mevcut dekorasyon unsurları 19. yy özelliklerini yansıtmaktadır. Ancak 1656 yılında Tokat'a gelen Evliya Çelebi ziyaret ettiği bu yapıdan geniş bir şekilde bahsetmektedir. Eserleri :
